Podcast #10 – Boycott Activity

mp3

This week, I talk about an activity that I’ve used a few times that teaches students about the concept of boycotting and asks them to do a bit of Internet research on the topic. I currently do a version of it that doesn’t require handouts, but the handouts that I used in the past are all available here. A lesson plan for this activity appeared in Chatterbox no. 2, KOTESOL’s global issues newsletter.

Near the end of the podcast, I mention a handout on looking critically at websites that could be used with this activity.

While explaining the activity, I refer to some issues behind various Coca-Cola boycotts. I don’t claim to know whether or not these allegations are true, but here are some sources for additional information. The India Resource Center has information on a variety of the complaints made against Coca-Cola in India and this video from PBS investigates some of the charges made against Coca-Cola in Columbia.

Here is the resource that lets you test the readability of a given text.

Finally, I host these podcasts for free at OurMedia.org. It’s a great service that allows you to share media files with folks all over the world absolutely for free.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or want to share some ideas of your own.
