One Laptop per Child

October 12th, 2007 by Dave · No Comments

I’ve been interested in the idea of a $100 laptop for children in developing countries ever since I first heard of it. It seems to have become a reality and the laptop itself sounds pretty spectacular.

It’s light, very durable, water resistant and very efficient in terms of power consumption. It includes open source software and a collaboration based user interface. They are always online and have a dual-mode display: a color LED laptop screen and a sunlight-readable, black-and-white e-book. Finally, one of the neatest things is that each laptop ships with at least two of three options for hand-powering: a crank, a pedal, or a pull-cord.

If you’re interested, you can donate one for $200 (to handle shipping in processing). If you’d like to get one yourself, for $399 you can give one and get one. That offer begins November 12th.
