I first mentioned FreeRice last year. In brief, it was a website that raised money via advertising to make donations of rice while visitors to the site went through a vocabulary quiz. Now, they have added quizzes on a variety of other subjects, including grammar, art, geography and chemistry. They have also […]

Twenty Questions: Social Justice Quiz 2008
September 16th, 2008 · No Comments
I just came across this social justice quiz. It not only has some thought provoking questions, but also provides references for the answers. It is posted over at truthout.org, a site full of global issues related news articles. Below, I’ve posted some of the questions that I am planning to use with […]

I’m Voting Republican

I realize that this video is very partisan, but perhaps it could be used in certain contexts for critical media exercises. In my opinion, it starts slow (and obvious) but picks up around the middle. I particularly like the clips about the EPA and GMO food (1:29-2:00).

Glassbooth
August 26th, 2008 · 6 Comments
In my global issues class this fall, I’m interested in doing a little bit on the US presidential election. One resource that I’m planning to use is Glassbooth, an interactive quiz that students can take to see which US presidential candidate best aligns with their values. It is easy to use, and […]

Facebook Newsfeed Summarizing Activity
July 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments
I just read this piece over at McSweeney’s. Basically, it is Hamlet written via Facebook newsfeed messages. A sample:
Hamlet wonders if he should continue to exist. Or not.
Hamlet thinks Ophelia might be happier in a convent.
Ophelia removed “moody princes” from her interests.
Hamlet posted an event: A Play That’s Totally Fictional and In No […]

Good Sites for Social Justice Issues and Environmental Issues

Larry Ferlazzo’s blog is an incredible resource for ESL teachers. It features tons and tons of useful resources, particularly for teachers with decent access to technology. One good way to find stuff is by going through his “best of” lists. Two recent lists that may be of interests are the best teacher […]

Infographics

The International Network Archive at Princeton has an interesting collection of Infographics. These six “maps” depict statistical information in a variety of striking graphical ways. The one pictured here is on transportation, and I think the ones on weapons and water could also be useful in a global issues ESL class. Personally, […]

eslflow.com has a good-sized collection of environmental activities for the ESL / EFL classroom. Topics include climate change, pollution and transportation. The materials look to be mainly vocabulary exercises and readings. Let us know in the comments if you find any particularly good ones.

FreePoverty.com
June 19th, 2008 · No Comments
FreePoverty is a new site similar to FreeRice. Students go through a geography quiz, with correct answers raising money for water donations to developing countries. Currently, I haven’t seen any third party validation of the site, so I’m not sure if it is legit or not. The quiz is pretty fun, though. […]
