sophomore - week 2 Read your paragraph to your partner. Talk about the similarities and differences between your answers. Volunteers share answers, talk about grammar and vocab. Read example answers (below) / go over vocab. Have students take notes and tell them back to me in their own words. Discuss: 1. How would you respond to these comments if you heard them from a customer? 2. Do you agree that the government (or Chinese people) treats foreigners better than local people? 3. How do you think China is different for foreigners than for Chinese people? 4. Do you agree that Chinese culture is being lost? Share answers to above questions as a class. Roleplay - An American tourist calls a travel agency. The tourist is interested in traveling in China but hasn't decided yet. Ask some basic questions about China. Brainstorm questions first. (What's China like? What's the weather like? What's the food like? Is it safe? How do people feel about Americans? etc.) Volunteers show roleplay, then class discussion of possible answers to the basic questions. Look at textbook - any questions on reading? HW: Start lesson 2. Paragraph - "How is China changing?" Sample responses to "What's China like?" China is a very nice place. The people are warm-hearted, kind and loving. My stay in China was very good. I felt welcomed and respected. --- I like China. It's got it's problems no doubt, with a lack of individual rights, corruption and so on. But I live in Tianjin and the people here are so friendly to foreigners and are honest and good people. Chinese people seem to have more negative opinions of their country than foreigners. I guess this isn't surprising, given that foreigners are treated better by the government than local people. --- My memories of China from 1978 are still vivid, warm and wonderful. My memories of China in 2006 are unremarkable. Beijing and Shenyang are just modern cities that could be in any country - except that everyone speaks Chinese. Of course the Great Wall, Tiantan and the Summer Palace were spectacular tourist sites. I will return in July. This time I will travel slowly through the country side. I hope to find more of the old China this time. If I thought the old ways were completely lost I would not return to China. --- beautiful place, the worst food i have tasted, friendly people, dodgy eating habbits (spitting on floor, slurping etc)
