Other Resources

Below you’ll find a collection of resources that can be used for a variety of classroom activities. I like to bring in visual / numerical things to use in class to save us from a lot of in-class reading time. All links lead away from ESL etc. and I am not responsible for their content.

Postsecret – Each Sunday a new gallery of “secret” postcards are displayed. They are often quite interesting visually. Students could be asked to describe their favorite postcard, freewrite the backstory of one, or make postcards of their own.

Get Your War On – A very opinionated comic strip dealing with the War on Terror. Adult language abounds. Still, some of them could launch very interesting class discussions.

StoryCorps – A project recording stories from “regular” Americans. There is a huge archive of stories to listen to, personal stories told in ordinary language. It is also available as a podcast.

This American Life – A great personal story based radio show. Each episode typically includes 3 to 6 stories based somewhat loosely on a theme. They stream their archives for free but, unfortunately, only the last week’s show is available as an mp3. In a school with a reliable classroom internet connection, these shows could provide some interesting content. One place to start is this page which lists their favorite episodes.

DIAGRAM – A magazine with free online archives, DIAGRAM contains a bunch of schematics and other diagrams that could be used to stimulate class discussions. An interesting linguistic one is this one which illustrates various uses of the phrase “X is the new Y” in 2005.
