Thanks for stopping by!
Basically, this site brings together resources for ESL and EFL teachers who are interested in bringing global issues and / or activism into their classes.
In addition to the blog there are a bunch of static pages. These include my teaching materials and links to other resources. My materials are divided in to two sections: general and global issues-specific. The links are similarly divided into ESL and global issues sections, along with a collection of research articles, journals and email groups. I also have an ESL podcast, in which I offer ideas, share materials and discuss my teaching.
Over the past couple of years I have published a few articles on bringing global issues and activism into the language classroom.
In addition to teaching, I led a project making an intensive English program more environmentally responsible and am interested in activism outside of the classroom as well.
About me: My name is David Royal, and I am the director of program operations for the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa. I have been teaching ESL / EFL for over 10 years and have been an administrator for the last 2. I taught for 5 years in Taiwan, primarily at a language school for adults and a cram school for elementary-aged children. After that, I went to the University of Hawaii where I taught at the Hawaii English Language Program (HELP) while completing an MA degree in Second Language Studies. I then taught English at a college in Hunan, China, before moving to Tampa in May of 2008.
